FAQ

Who can enter the cutscape 1.0 competition?
The competition is open, but not limited, to commercial video and film editors, video and film students, RED editors, RED hobbyists, and anyone interested in film-grade RED video footage. You can enter as an individual, a company, a film school, or a group of student. There are no rules against collaboration; however, each member of your team must be mentioned on your Registration Form, which you will send in with your hard drive or fill out online after you have signed up.

What does the winner receive?
We think the prizes for this contest are pretty awesome! First, the winning cut gets national airtime on a music station that actually plays music videos, FUSE NETWORK. The winner also gets their name in the credits as well as mentioned by the host of the television show in which it will air. And if that was't enough, they also will get from SONY a 46" Flatscreen HDTV! For the tech geeks out there, you can check out the specs here:
46" BRAVIA S Series Flat Panel HDTV

But the REAL prize for anyone who has seen really nicely shot RED footage or has struggeled to find film-quality content to edit with - is the RED FOOTAGE itself! The ability to have access to this kind of quality footage and cutting-edge technology is worth the price of admission alone! Try to find royalty free footage like this for less than $1000. So, in a way, everyone who signs up is already a winner. The prizes are just icing on the cake.

Who will decide the winner?
There will be three judges of the cutscape 1.0 open source music video competition; the director, the band, and the community of cutters who enter the competition. Each third will have equal voting power. Each judge will list their top ten cuts, giving a scale of 1-10 points with the highest (10) going to their top choice and descending in value from there. To determine the community of cutters' top ten list, each cutter who enters a music video cut will have three videos they can vote for. The top ten videos to get the most votes determine the list. The three lists are combined and tabulated with the winner receiving the highest number of points.

How will I get the RED footage?
You have two ways to enter, the first option is to send us a drive with at least 250 gigs of free disk space, and the second opiton is we can purchase a 250 gig hard drive (to save you the hassle and cost of sending us a drive). We will then load all of the music video's assets (storyboards, notes, music track, refernence vidoes, 2K and 4K footage) onto the hard drive and send it back to you.

What are the system preferences for my editing system to handle the RED footage?

Contrary to popular belief, their are several options to editing RED footage. Of course, the most acceptable are Final Cut Pro or Avid running on the Mac OS. If you are editing on a PC based platform, you can use REDCINE to output the footage to any PC based editing system. We have included several resources on this website to help you ease your mind regarding ease of use. Even if your CPU isn't fast enough to handle the 2K files, you can edit utilizing the quicktime reference files.

What does the term Open Source Footage mean?
The general definition of open source content or films
is the release of samples and source material from a film under a license which allows other parties to create fan fiction or similar derivative works. The release of creative content under licenses such as Creative Commons which are more permissive than traditional copyright restrictions. For our purposes, it means that the creator of the content (the director and the band) have given you permission to create and utilize this footage in any way you see fit as long as you are not using it for commercial use or monetary gain. So, go ahead - have fun with it and take advantage of the license.
